To request a Nikāḥ at Islamic Society of Monterey County, the following conditions must be met. Please review each requirement carefully before contacting the Imam.

Valid Identification
Both the bride and groom must present valid government-issued identification.

Known to the Community
The couple must be known to the community, or someone known to the community must be able to vouch for them.

The Bride's Walī (Guardian)
The bride must have a valid Walī (guardian). This is ordinarily her father, followed by the next eligible male guardian according to Islamic law.

Walī Requirement
A Walī is required for every Nikāḥ. If a Muslim woman has no living qualified Walī, or her Walī refuses to permit her to marry a suitable Muslim without a valid Islamic reason, the Imam may serve as her Walī after reviewing the circumstances.

Two Witnesses
Two upright Muslim witnesses must be present.

Mahr (Bridal Gift)
The Mahr (bridal gift) must be agreed upon before the Nikāḥ.

A Muslim Woman's Spouse
A Muslim woman may only marry a Muslim man.

A Muslim Man's Spouse
A Muslim man may marry a Muslim woman or a chaste woman from the People of the Book (Jewish or Christian). In all cases, the bride must be represented by her valid Walī.

Civil Marriage License
The marriage license application (or any required civil documents) must be brought to the Imam for completion before the Nikāḥ, in accordance with California law.

The Imam's Discretion
The Imam reserves the right to postpone or decline to officiate any Nikāḥ if the requirements of Islamic law are not met or if additional verification is needed.
